East Bay Young Democrats (EBYD) works to encourage young people in Alameda and Contra Costa counties to take an active role in their community through activism, policy, and politics. We aim to contribute to the growth and influence of the ideals and philosophy of the Democratic Party.
We strive to promote candidates, ballot measures, and policies that:
- Advance economic, environmental, and social justice in all East Bay communities;
- Help and empower young people and underrepresented residents afford to live and thrive in the Bay Area;
- Ensure that the East Bay remains a vibrant, diverse, and welcoming community;
- Continue the Bay Area’s leadership in environmental protection and accessible and affordable transit; and
- Defend the civil and human rights and civil liberties of everyone in our community.
The East Bay Young Democrats (EBYD) is the East Bay’s largest Democratic organization for young forward-thinking Democrats of all backgrounds. We are shaping the Democratic Party for the next generation and promoting the interests of young adults in local, state, and national politics.
EBYD has always been an organization that is proudly inclusive and rigorously opposed to hate. Like you, we are shattered by the 2016 presidential election and it's implications.
There's no sugar coating this. We now live in a country where the most vile racism, misogyny, xenophobia, and homophobia is not a deterrent to the highest and most important office in the land. Bullying and harrasment in our schools and our streets is on the rise, and dark days are ahead. Half of the country stayed home and many others were disenfranchised. We have a lot of soul searching to do.
We take small solace in the fact that a majority of voters rejected Trump, and locally, most of our endorsed campaigns were successful. The East Bay rejected hate, and we call on all our leaders to do everything in their power to make us a refuge from the storm.
To anyone reading this who feels threatened and afraid, we want you to know that you are valued, you are important, you matter. Take the time you need to process what has happened to our country, take care of your body and mind as best you can, and surround yourselves with the people and places that you find beautiful and inspiring, if only for a moment. The fight for the soul of our nation begins as soon as you are ready.
